Invincible Summer (2023), a group exhibition presented by Anthea Boesenberg, Rhonda Nelson and Anna Russell at the Incinerator Gallery (Australia), centered around the intersection of hope and climate consciousness:
In the last few years, we have been preoccupied with seemingly intractable global problems. Today there is a cautious optimism and a focus on what we can do to find solutions. The words of French philosopher Albert Camus, “In the midst of winter I found there was, within me, an invincible summer”, remind us that we have within us a kernel of personal power, resilience and persistence we can draw upon in the face of hopelessness.
Invincible Summer
In collaboration with perfumer Jocelyn Fullerton (Cult of Scent), Tammy responded to the prompt and scent designed three fragrances rooted in the nostalgia and transformation of scent memories in the context of climate change and the evolving environmental landscape. Drawing from nuanced experiences, the first fragrance juxtaposed the comforting aroma of fire, once evocative of communal barbecues, with its new association of fear, in light of Australia’s recent bushfires. Additionally, the exhibition delves into shared generational memories, spotlighting the iconic scents of cut grass reminiscent of suburban garden weekend rituals and coconut oil, a reminder of sun-soaked days when individuals would bask on beaches, layering themselves with the fragrant product. In an effort to further inspire dialogue and extend the thematic scope, the space is suffused with a custom-created ‘scent of hope’, resulting in an ethereal blend dominated by bergamot. This aromatic inclusion serves a dual purpose, fostering deeper engagement within the gallery space and offering visitors an anchoring point for conversations about the exhibited works and broader thematic concerns.
